Ada Maria Smith;
오른발이 뒤틀려 제대로 걷지도 못하고
그래서 비정한 엄마에게 절름발이 소리를 들으며 집밖으로 한발자국도 나가지 못하고
심지어 엄마가 화나면 싱크대 밑에 갖혀 벌을 받던 Ada.
독일과의 전쟁으로 인해 아이들을 시골로 대피 시키는 중, 자신은 절대 엄마가 보내주지 않을걸 알기에 몰래 혼자 걷는 연습을 하여 동생(Jamie)과 함께 Ada도 도망을 친다.
아무도 다리가 불편한 Ada와 Jamie를 데려가지 않아 억지로 Susan이라는 독신녀에게 맡겨지고 세 사람의 티격태격 삶이 시작된다.
어릴때부터 뒤틀린 다리 때문에 자기가 사랑받지 못했고 늘 엄마에게 욕설과 손찌검을 당하며 살아온 Ada는 Susan이 자기에게 베푸는 모든것이 불편하기만 하다.
그럴 때마다 모진 말을 내뱉고 소리지르고 울기를 반복하지만 Susan은 다 받아준다.
뒤틀린 발을 고치기 위해서 엄마의 동의를 구하는 편지를 여러차례 보내지만 한번도 회신을 받지 못한다.
그리고 어느날 나타난 엄마.
두 아이를 대신 보살펴 주고 있는 정부로부터 청구되는 돈을 내기 싫어 아이들을 찾으러 온 것.
런던으로 다시 돌아오자 말자, 목발과 신발을 치워버리는 엄마.
험난한 앞으로의 삶을 예고하는 듯 하지만,
Susan과 생활하는 동안 강인한 아이가 된 Ada는 엄마에게 자기들이 떠나도 돈을 낼 필요가 없다고 얘기하고 엄마는 흔쾌히 동의한다.
하지만 폭격을 당하고, 가까스로 대피소를 찾아 하루를 지내고 다음날 자신들을 찾아온 Susan과 만나 다시 Kent 로 돌아간다.
그런데 Susan의 집이 폭격으로 온데간데 없고, 마을 사람들이 모두 세사람을 둘러싸고 안도의 눈물을 흘린다.
Susan은 아이들을 구했고, 아이들이 Susan을 구한 셈이다.

The good things here - not being shut up in the one room, for starters, and then Butter, and my crutches, and being warm even when it was cold outside. clean clothes. Nightly baths. three meals a day. That cup of Bovril before bedtime. The ocean seen from the top of the hill - all of these things, they were just temporary.

Not bad, Ada. Sad. Angry. Frightened. Not bad.
It was too much, all this emotion.

It was kind of him to mention my dress instead of my bad foot.
I thought you kept writing to Mam because you wanted to get rid of us.
I always thought it was. I thought I'd done something wrong.
There was a Before Dunkirk version of me and an After Dunkirk version.
Look at them, Susan said. Look at Ada. If she gets put with the wrong person she'll go right back to where she was.
Listen. I am not sending you away. She talked a long time after that. I heard nothing beyond the words 'not sending you away'.
What set you off?
My bare foot's a long way from my brain.
I would like to speak to your commanding officer. The Government asks us to report anything suspicious, and that's what I am going to do. If you won't listen, I want to talk to someone who will.
It was as if I'd been born in the village. As if I'd been born with two strong feet. As if I really was someone important, someone loved.
She grinned. It was her stuffing-Ada-into-the-cabinet grin. Is that a promise? she said.
All of my life I would remember those words. I said 'Yes'.
It's lucky I went after you, she said. The two of you saved my life, you did.
