유일한 고릴라인 Ivan이 사는 곳으로 상점가에 딸린 작은 동물원이다.
코끼리 스텔라, 멍멍이 밥, 보스이자 주인인 맥과 일꾼 조지, 그리고 그녀의 딸 줄리아.
이반이 스케치한 그림까지 팔아보지만 관람객은 점점 줄기만 하고~
맥은 어린 코끼리 루비를 사 온다.
루비의 이야기, 스텔라의 이야기, 그리고 이반의 이야기.
그리고 스텔라는 다리의 상처가 깊어져 그만 세상을 떠나고 이반은 스텔라에게 루비를 지켜주겠다고 약속한다.
매일매일 하루 세번 일년 내내 쇼를 해야하는 루비, 점점 지쳐가는 루비를 바라보는 이반.
줄리아가 나눠준 물감으로 뭔가를 그리기 시작하는 이반. 맥에게 들키지만 결국 커다란 퍼즐같은 그림을 완성해서 줄리아에게 보여주고 줄리아와 아빠 조지는 이반이 뭘 원하는지 이해하고 이반이 그린 그림들로 간판을 바꿔버린다.
다음날 출근한 맥은 이반이 그린 그림으로 간판이 바뀌어 있는 것을 보고 노발대발 하지만
매스컴의 주목을 받으면서 사람들이 다시 붐비기 시작하자 기뻐한다.
하지만 사람들이 많아지고 인기가 조금 생겼을 뿐 달라진 것이 없는듯 하다.
그러다 한 매스컴의 카메라맨이 claw-stick을 찍게되고 방송되면서 상황이 반전된다.
결국 몰은 문을 닫고, 루비와 이반은 어딘가로 옮겨지는데 그곳이 바로 동물원.
이반은 고릴라들과 함께 살게되고, 루비가 또래 코끼리들과 "기쁨"의 눈빛으로 어울려 노는 것을 직접 보게 된다.
이야기 플롯은 실화 기반이라고 한다.
짧은 챕터들로 구성되고 고릴라가 화자라서 문장들도 평이하다.
어린 코끼리 루비를 지켜주겠다고 한 약속을 지키기 위해 애쓰는 고릴라 이반의 이야기. Good!!!

"Memories are precious," Stella adds. "They help tell us who we are. Try remembering all your keepers.
Humans always smell odd when change is in the air.
"To break her spirit," Stella says. "So she could learn to balance on a pedestal. So she could stand on her hind legs. So a dog could jump on her back while she walked in mindless circles."
"Your gorilla hearts are made of ice, Ivan," she said, her eyes glittering. "Ours are made of fire."
He was everything a silverback is meant to be: a guide, a teacher, a protector.
A light rain drums.
Once again I consider lying, but when I look at Ruby, the half-formed words die in y throat.
I feel something tighten in my chest, something dark and hot. "And it's not a domain," I add. I pause, and then I say it. "It's a cage."
Mack says Ruby's not picking up the slack after all.
"Good news, huh?" Bob says when Mack's out of earshot.

A mad gorilla is loud. But a mad human can be loud too.
When his eyes fall on the claw-stick, he stops. He trains his camera on the gleaming blade.
It's joy.
I put my hand to the glass. Maya looks over. Thank you, I try to say with my eyes. Thank you.

Make eye contact.
Show your form.
Strut.
Grunt.
Throw a stick.
Grunt some more.
Make some moves.
Romance is hard work.
It looks so easy on TV.
I'm not sure I will ever get the hang of it.
